Hair GrowthMost people’s hair grows about a half inch every month — and there’s no magic potion that will make your hair grow any faster than that. But there are things you can do to ensure the maximum amount of hair growth each month and a strong, healthy head of hair. Here’s your prescription for healthy hair growth:

Eat a healthy diet. You are what you eat, and eating a healthy diet will make your hair grow healthy and strong. Eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins like eggs, fish, and nuts, and whole grains. Vitamins can help you fill in any nutritional gaps to ensure that your body gets all the nutrients it needs to encourage hair growth. A, B, C, and E are essential for hair growth, but too much vitamin A can actually cause hair loss, so be sure to take no more than 100,000 IU each day. Beta-carotene, magnesium, silica, nettle, flaxseed oil, and folic acid may also improve hair growth. Add a multivitamin to your daily routine. Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or health food store owner to select a multivitamin that’s right for your body.

Stay hydrated. Water is essential for keeping hair and skin healthy — be sure you get at least your recommended eight glasses of water each day to promote healthy hair growth.

Protect your health. Many medical issues, including hypo- and hyperthyroidism, can cause hair loss or limit your hair growth. If you’re experiencing hair loss or if your hair appears to have stopped growing, consult your doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Many of the habits that are bad for your body — like smoking, drinking alcohol, and living with a lot of stress — can limit your hair growth or even cause hair loss. Exercise, plenty of sleep, and a varied and nutritious diet can all help your body grow a healthy head of hair.

Care for your hair. Rough treatment — heat from hair dryers or hot irons, constant brushing, coloring, and perms, exposure to the elements — can all damage hair, causing breakage and hair loss. To encourage hair growth, be gentle with your hair. Allow it to air dry, limit chemical treatments, and limit the amount of time you handle your hair.

Moisturize your tresses. Conditioning keeps your hair in tip-top shape and will help stop the damage that causes hair loss. Apply a rich conditioner every time you shower, and supplement it with a hot oil treatment at least once a month.
Give yourself a massage. Give your scalp a quick rubdown weekly to encourage blood flow to the area, which will help get nutrients to your hair.

Get a cut. A haircut may seem like the last thing you need if you’re trying to grow your hair, but frequent trims will help you get rid of split ends, avoid hair breakage, and maintain a healthier head of hair.
