Dark Circles: Prevention and Remedies

The skin around the eyes is very delicate and thinner than most other areas of the face, so it is naturally likely to take on a blue or grayish tint from the veins that rest beneath. Dark circles may be more noticeable if you have inherited traits such as fair and transparent skin, or deep-set eyes. This area requires special care and reflects neglect.

By taking certain precautions, you may be able to prevent dark circles from forming. If these measures don’t work, home remedies or medical treatments may be the key to banishing these all-too-common blemishes.

The Causes of Dark Circles

Dark circles under the eyes are often the result of some combination of the following:

  • Lack of sleep
  • Nutrition, poor diet
  • Stress
  • Heredity
  • Exposure to sun
  • Allergies
  • Medications
  • Pregnancy 

 Prevention of Dark Circles

  1. Dark circles can develop at an early age, like adolescence and early 20s, although it is more common in older people. The way to prevent dark circles is to have a nutritious and balanced diet, including fresh fruits, salads, yogurt and sprouts in your daily diet, along with unprocessed cereals, skimmed milk, cottage cheese, lentils and beans.
  2. Daily exercise, along with deep breathing, helps blood circulation, oxygenation and control of stress. Adequate sleep and relaxation are very important.
  3. Gentle movements and a light touch are essential while handling the area, to remove make up or apply creams. It is better not to massage the area, so that the skin does not get pulled or stretched in any way.
  4. A cream which has been specially formulated for the area around the eyes should be applied. Heavy creams are not suitable. It should be a cream with a light texture and consistency. The cream should be removed with a moist cotton wool after 10 minutes.
  5. Eye fatigue can also be relived with washing. Wash your eyes with warm water and follow this with cold water. This improves blood circulation to the eyes and soothes them. It also cleanses the eyes and relieves congestion.

Home Remedies of Dark Circles

  1. Try applying a cold compress of rosemary tea to increase circulation, which helps reduce swelling around the eyes. Soak a washcloth in the tea, ring out extra liquid anal place over eyes for 15 to 20 minutes, once a day, as needed.
  2. Mixing potato juice with cucumber juice in equal quantities helps if there is puffiness along with dark circles.
  3. Use the parsley cubes instead of eye creams to diminish dark circles and puffiness. Parsley is packed with chlorophyll which helps fade darkness, while the ice cubes reduce the swelling.
  4. Massage with almond oil under and around eyes at bed time daily for 2 weeks and see the improvement. Almond helps to remove dark circles, and is an excellent “skin food”.
  5. Rub the area with a powdered Vitamin E capsule and wipe off with a mixture of honey and egg white.

Dark circles can affect anyone and exact a toll on their self-esteem. Although it’s not always possible to prevent these bluish and grayish blemishes, home and medical treatments can help erase the raccoon look and allow the real you to shine through.
