Guide to Skin Care Ingredients

A Woman Looking Through Skin Care Ingredients The ability to understand and analyze the ingredients in your skin care is important for correctly choosing the products that provide the best possible balance of effectiveness and safety.

Take a look at these common skin care ingredients below and be an educated consumer!

Salicylic Acid

You’ve probably seen this common skin care ingredient on lots of skin care products. This ingredient is often recommended to those who have acne or oily skin because it helps exfoliate and cleanse our faces! Don’t shy away from this ingredient just because it’s an acid, it can help reveal fresh and beautiful skin!

If you use skin care products for aging skin, there’s no doubt you’ve come across this common skin care ingredient! Retinoids, also known as Vitamin A, fights wrinkles, increases skin cell turnover and is even said to shrink oil glands! If you have larger pores or aging skin, look for this ingredient in your skin care!

Hyaluronic Acid

Aging or dry skin will love this next common skin care ingredient! Hyaluronic acid, which is actually a component of connective tissue, is said to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water! It does wonders to hydrate skin, help diminish the appearance of wrinkles and sun damage. Look for this ingredient in moisturizers and mixed in with make up!

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

AHA’s are also common skin care ingredients with acids in them that you shouldn’t shy away from! The acids in Alpha Hydroxy Acids are actually derived from fruit or milk and they do a fab job in exfoliating and revitalizing our skin! As with any use of an exfoliating product, make sure you follow up with sunscreen!

Decreased collagen and elasticity in the skin calls for a skin care ingredient like peptides! Peptides pack a powerful punch and can reduce the look of wrinkles by plumping the skin as well as smooth out and moisturize dry or rough skin. Look for peptides in anti-aging products and even in lip products!

Silicone is another one of the common skin care ingredients that you’ll find in many beauty products. While you might be turned off by the name, does it remind you of needles and fake boobs? Silicone in skin care helps protect the skin and even help decrease the appearance of scar tissue! Look for the good silicone in toners and moisturizers!

This next common skin care ingredient is frequently seen in soaps but it’s also found in many skin care products. Glycerin can moisten parched skin, help restore water levels and prevent drying in skin. Glycerin is also great for those who have eczema and can help calm itchy skin!

 Jojoba Oil

This is a natural oil derived from plants that is great for your scalp, skin and lips! You can use jojoba oil straight up for some uses or look for it in moisturizers. It’s easily absorbed and is ideal to use in the colder weather!

It’s good to be aware of the bad ingredients that are commonly found in skin care but it’s also nice to know the good once! Do you read your skin care labels?
