How to Get Rid and Prevent Blackheads

13 Feb

A Girl with BlackheadsWe know that blackheads are not something you want on your face – ever. The word alone is not a pretty one.  The longer blackheads go untreated, the more they expand your pores, and the longer they stay expanded, the bigger your pores become.

Blackheads or comedones are basically the same as whiteheads, except for blackheads have an oxidized fatty deposit. And when fatty deposits are oxidized, they turn dark. So they’re called blackheads. When they’re not oxidized, they’re called whiteheads. Blackheads differ from other pimples because they are open, and not enclosed by a layer of skin like most spots or pimples.

With the help of a few tricks we will help you get rid and prevent blackheads.

Properly cleanse the skin, preferably with a salicylic acid-based cleanser, which will help treat and prevent blackheads. This will both act as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

Use an oil-free moisturizer, preferably including Hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate the skin and always use an SPF during the day, especially since you’ll be exfoliating your skin often as part of this process.

Exfoliating is one of the best remedies when it comes to minimizing the appearance of blackheads. You can use cleansers, brushes and sponges to gently scrub away plugged pores. Probably the key element is baking soda, as it is an ingredient that is often used in microdermabrasion which as a method of exfoliating, can aid in minimizing blackheads when done regularly. Mixed with water, baking soda can be used to create a gentle scrubbing paste. Alternatively, you can use apple cider vinegar instead of water, which has astringent and anti-bacterial properties and will similarly clear out pores.

Do a Mask

Twice a week, do a  clay masks as they are great for oil control. They work by drawing out excess impurities (dirt, oil and sluggish dead skin cells) out of our pores. Like with microdermabrasion, it needs to be done on a regular basis for best results.

Whether store-bought or homemade, pore strips can provide immediate improvement of some types of plugged pores but the blackheads will recur unless a proper skin care regime is followed routinely as a preventative measure.

Salicylic and Glycolic Acid

The best way to break down oil in clogged pores is by using beta-hydroxy acid (salicylic) or combination peels containing salicylic acid. It is lipophilic (attracted to fat/oils) and concentrates at the surface of the pore to dissolve the plugs. Consistent use will prevent the blackheads before they form and help clear existing pores. Additionally, glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid which is derived from sugar cane, helps clear dead skin and debris on the surface. These two work well in tandem.

What NOT to DO

Be careful with the products you use for your face as well. Stay away from products that are too creamy, rich or heavy. They are more likely to clog up our pores causing blackheads. This applies with your makeup as well go for oil-free makeup. Also avoid using products that’s too harsh or drying. When our skin is stripped of moisture, it produces more oil to make up for the lost moisture and again – it can lead to blackheads sprouting.

It may take everything in your power, but the worst approach is to squeeze blackheads. This can make skin inflamed, infected and even cause scarring. Be careful not to use any sharp tools on the skin. Leave that to the professionals!

I hope these tricks were helpful, good luck!

Have you ever tried the Nutrimetics facial peel creme? I was hesitant to use as i have pretty sensitive skin, but had a noticable reduction in my pore size, and no reaction.
