How to Take Care of Curly Hair

A Girl with Curly HairMaintaining your curly hair can be very challenging sometimes. Through trial and error, you’ll usually find out what works best for your hair. Paying close attention to the products that are used and how to manipulate your curly hair through styling are important components to a “good hair day.”

To prevent a hideous hairstyle or cause irreparable damage, you’ll need to follow a few steps to learn how to take care of curly hair.

Find a good stylist: Ask if they know anything about the technique of “twist-cutting”, which is great for curly hair. It’s best to get recommendations from people who have the same hair type as yours. Cuts for curls are different than cuts for other hair types.

The right kind of shampoo: Use a shampoo that doesn’t lather or make suds. Lather can add frizz or cause dryness, and suds-less shampoos keep curly hair bouncy and beautiful. Also shampoo your hair no more than twice per week, as excess shampooing can add static and frizz to curls.

Keep hair well-moisturized: One of the best ways to ensure consistently well-defined curls is keeping them moisturized. Shampoo your hair to remove leftover styling products and then apply a conditioner. Allow the conditioner to soak into your hair for a few minutes before rinsing it completely out. To create more manageable hair, use a leave-in conditioner for extra body, shine and frizz-free waves. Once your hair receives an adequate amount of moisture, it will continue to grow and look healthier.

Apply products while wet: Your hair should be as wet as possible when you begin the styling process. After shampooing and conditioning, do not towel dry. In fact, don’t bring a towel anywhere near your curls. Instead, squeeze the excess water from your hair .

Divide hair into sections: To ensure full coverage of hair products, you’ll need to section your hair. Use plastic clips to hold hair out of the way. It’s usually easier to begin at the back of the head. Work with a section of hair, applying product from the roots all the way to the ends. Once you’re sure that section is saturated, you can move on to the next sections. Trying to put product on your hair as one big piece will probably find you with well-defined hair on top and frizzy curls underneath.

Leave your wet curly hair alone: The more you touch it, adjust it, fuss with it, or play with it, the more frizzy and messy it becomes when dry.

Avoid using hair dryer: Blow-dried curly hair means a frizzy mess, as well as damaged hair and breakage problems. Let curly hair air-dry and do not touch. If you must use a hairdryer, add a diffuser attachment on the coolest setting. Do not dry hair completely or it will frizz — leave it a bit wet.

Get a great cut: Cut damaged ends frequently to prevent unwanted hair issues. Getting rid of split ends can prevent them from traveling to a higher level on your hair cuticle. If you’ve noticed that your hair length seems to be stuck at one length, it really isn’t. With damaged ends, your hair is more prone to breakage and can’t successfully reach your desired length.

Use products that are made especially for curly hair: There are many tools for enhancing your wavy hair such as shampoos, styling gels, conditioners and sprays. These products allow your waves to clump together and form a silkier pattern when styling. Some of their ingredients include vitamins, lavender or fruit extracts to promote a bouncier and more defined wave as well.

Great advices. I did not know about applying products when the hair is very wet and not to use the towel. I actually stayed with the towel on my hair for 45 minutes. Interesting
